Thomas Edison in Menlo Park

A Message from Phyllis Boeddinghaus, President:
Greetings. I hope all had a delightful summer and are ready to resume activities and attend programs. Bill Ainslie has planned programs focusing on Local History, with field trips and some daytime meetings at the Metuchen Senior Center. For evening meetings, we will use the beautiful facilities of the Centenary United Methodist Church in Metuchen.

Toys is the theme for Metuchen's Country Fair. Our booth will sell notecards, sketches of Franklin School, postcards, maps, the 1888 Cookbook and other items. We will need volunteers to attend the booth, which will be in its usual spot. Please come to the Fair on Saturday, October 3rd (rain dates 10/10 and 10/17), and support the fundraisers that keep us financially sound.

Once again, we are fortunate to have reserved display cases in the Metuchen Library from mid January to mid February to showcase items from our archives. Local History Day is Sunday, Feb. 7, 1999, always a big hit with Metuchen and Edison residents. We will need volunteers to set up on Feb. 6th. We also need volunteers for refreshments and will circulate a sign up list at the first meeting.

This past year, much needed work has been continued in the Grimstead Room under the direction of Marie Vajo, with the help of Ellen Miller, Edith Guattery and myself. The files and file cabinets are now organized and indexed. We rely on our members to support our programs and activities, and hope for new members to continue to sustain and strengthen our organization. I depend on every one of you for help and ideas; and you can depend on me.

Membership in the Historical Society (which includes the Genealogical Club)
is only $10 a year. Call Membership Chairperson, Sylvia Taylor, at 548-8756 if
