Girl I Knew Somewhere

After I finished this song, I checked on the web to see who wrote it. In doing so, I realized that I've had some of the lyrics wrong all of these years. When Mike Nesmith wrote "that may be, I can't explain - just ask the girl that I knew somewhere" and I heard "that may be, I can't explain the past, the girl that I knew somewhere". When he wrote "you're staring down through faces", I heard "you're tearing down new faces". When he wrote "My thoughts are bound down in a whirl", I heard "I've thought about our little whirl". Oh well, that's life (that's what all the people say), the song is done. Almost 40 years later, I learn the truth: I've continued the fine tradition of mis-heard lyrics. There's a (bad moon) bathroom on the (rise) right. 'Scuse me while I kiss (the sky) this guy.
The Monkees were huge for a short time in my early teens, until the word leaked out that they were a "made-for-TV" band. In the beginning, most of them couldn't even play a musical instrument. They sang songs written by some of the heavyweight songwriters of the day, and they were pretty good. This song was written by one of the Monkees, and although it was a B side to a 45 that I owned, I always liked it.
I'm sure that I don't have the guitar solo exactly right, but neither are the lyrics (and probably some other parts), so that's OK.
I transposed the key from C to A.
